Eco-Friendly Purchasing and Designing

MSI realized that we have rare resource that we have to share with our descendants. Concretely speaking, electronic industry has upper, middle and downstream supply chains, and as one of main manufacturers of electronic industry, MSI is responsible and capable to promote greening to the industry. On the other hand, the electronic products have short life cycle due to rapid development of technology, and some products were threw aside even still usable. By eco-design, products can be recycled and reused, and that is the way to sustainable development.

Green Procurement

Eco-friendly products became very important non-tariff barrier in international trade. MSI is very active in this field, and trying to facilitate the production of eco-friendly products. We have abided by international regulations and various national legislations. Regarding the regulations outlined by the European Union¡¦s Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS), we have successfully introduced the QC080000 Hazardous Substances Process Management system standards certification under the IEC Quality Assessment System for Electronic Components, and verified by a third party.

We have established standard material confirmation processes and new supplier confirmation processes, which not only avoids the use of harmful chemicals, it also has the effect of bringing the industry to establish a green supply chain. Aside from green procurement, we are also actively engaging in environmental protection work through the design source, which is primarily divided into two major categories: selection and use of nontoxic components and ecological design.

Related measures:

  • Improve green supply chain management : starting from the suppliers, we conduct green product management and ensure that each supplier has realized MSI¡¦s requirement on green products.
  • We established supplier rating system, implemented different management to suppliers with different risk grade to improve MSI¡¦s ability of meeting the demands of different markets and clients.
  • Adjust purchasing process and information platform : through modifying internal ERP system, we integrated and stored information of new supplier certification, test report, and material decomposition. In addition to reduce the purchasing and R&D cost, we also assist sales or PM in external communications.
  • Requirement on green products : MSI insist on product quality and reliability, we actively invested in R&D to meet the requirement of new product reliability.

Green Design

In addition to strengthen our green procurement, but also a positive source of input from the design of the environmental protection work can be divided into parts of selected non-toxic and eco-design of the two.

From the stages of design and materials selecting, we eliminate toxic materials which can cause significant impact on environment. We specially stipulates following forbidden materials: Pb, Cd, Hg, Cr6+, PBB & PBDE. Br and Cl will be phased out by MSI in the near future.

Chart of Material Admission Process

MSI understands the importance of eco-design lies in taking into consideration of eco-impact during each life cycle of the product. MSI is dedicated to developing new technology to improve efficiency and to reduce the consumption of the electronic power, and this is just core concept of the EuP. EuP legislation has been finished by August 2007, and will implement at the end of 2008, which is very urgent for power supply, TFT-LCD TV, PC and NB, etc. we are now coordinating with Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs on promoting the establishment of eco-design system.

The measurements implemented includes: interrogate and exam on energy-saving product, take into consideration of possible impact on environment caused by product life cycle, design eco-friendly products, so as to reduce impact on the environment.

In order to reduce usage of energy during operation, we developed following new technologies :

  • DrMOS (Integrated Driver Mosfet) : MSI is the first one to introduce 3 in 1 DrMOS on motherboard in consumer market. By using this IC, CPU power efficiency can be utilized over 90%. Together with our unique Circu-Pipe design, our motherboard is able to reduce the consumption of electricity, cool down and prolong its life cycle.
  • Dual Core Cell & Hybrid Frozr : Intelligent power saving technology to reduce GPU fan loading; not only to save power but also enhance life time of GPU fan.
  • ECO Engine : by installing ECO engine into notebooks, users can choose different working mode, and the system will adjust the settings of brightness and CPU resources to extend the using time of battery.

In addition, we also devote to design recycling products and packaging with following methods :

  • We use recycling printing ink in the manufacture of packaging and user guide, which greatly reduced VOCs caused by the traditional printing ink and save the petroleum.
  • We use corrugated cartons in packaging with monochromatic printing, which reduced the damage of color printing and increased recycle opportunities.
  • The carton will be reused after it finishes its function of protecting the motherboard. MSI cleverly reuse them as treasure box and magazine rack to place periodicals.
  • Al-mg alloy casing : aluminum is nontoxic material; magnesium alloy has similar density withengineering plastic, but its intensity is far bigger than that of engineering plastic, and it will replace engineering plastic eventually. Since both aluminum alloy and magnesium alloy can be recycled and reused, the new notebook using these materials will be put into use in 2008.

Product Recycling

Electronic waste damages the environment and the health of people. If the waste could be properly recycled or treated, we could get more reusable resources, and create the economic value. In compliance with WEEE directive, MSI products is able to enter the EU market successfully through eco-design, 3R information disclosure, problem solving in product recycling via local recycle system.
